“Nausea, Headache, Vomiting, Lost of Appetite, Fatigue..”
Those are some of the terms often heard during a trip to high altitude. The climbing season is now officially open and crowds are gathering at some of the highest peaks in the world to begin their trekking adventure.
Altitude sickness is no stranger during these trips and most people tend to experience various forms of it. We will be zooming into the what, why, and how of altitude sickness in a 3 part series at Corezone Adventure School.
“What is Altitude Sickness?”
As the name suggest, the unwell feeling is caused by altitude, specifically high altitude. It typically occurs when a person travels above 2,400m above sea level (source: webmd).
Typically there are 3 types of Altitude Sickness:
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the mildest form and it’s very common. The symptoms can feel like a hangover – dizziness, headache, muscle aches, nausea.
High Altitude PulmonaryEdema (HAPE) is when there is fluid buildup in the lungs that can be very dangerous and even life threatening.
High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) is the most severe form of altitude sickness and happens when there’s fluid in the brain. It’s life threatening and you need to seek medical attention right away.
