ARE YOU TRULY READY TO HIT THE SNOW? A guide to winter wear

Winter and the school holidays are fast approaching, with that we are sure many of you are planning or have already planned for a trip to the Northern Hemisphere.

One common thing that we encounter during this time of the year would be, customers walking in and asking “Which jacket is rated to xx degrees? I need it to withstand the cold.” Our standard answer is, layering is the key to staying warm in cold temperatures, not one particular jacket or fleece.

So, what is layering?

Foundation layer

Next-to-skin layer to wick sweat, retain heat, and dry quickly.
Made of performance fabric like merino wool, polyester, or polypropylene and cotton is a big NO.
Examples include: Millet Carline or Montane Bionic

Mid layer

Insulating and most flexible part of the system.
Consist of fleece or lightweight down.
Examples include: Millet, Montane and Milo range of jackets and fleece.

Outer layer

To block wind, snow, or rain
It has to be waterproof, windproof, and breathable.
Examples include: Millet, Montane, Eider, Lafuma and Milo range of outer shells, pants and 3-in-1 systems.

Extremities

Here we refer to your hand, foot, head and face.
Make sure you get a good set of gloves, Buff®, goggles and waterproof boots to ensure you stay protected.
Examples include: Outdoor Designs gloves, Polar Buff®, La Sportiva range of Goretex boots and Julbo goggles

Remember, the rule of thumb is a well planned layering system. If in doubt, you can always drop by our store and we will be more than glad to guide you.
