Core Friends "Slim River Perception Kayak Expedition"
13 CORE FRIENDS and 2 river guides from KL Canoe Sports Associationn paddled 18km down Slim River in a collection of Perception kayaks on Sunday, 23 July 2006.
The trip was very interesting. Not only did we have new student paddlers, but we had three very adventurous and fit senior citizens with us too. We came across many herds of water buffalos sharing the river with us, including a herd that decided to run across the river to the other bank right in front of us. It was a heart pounding moment to watch the powerful buffalos rush across the river...outshadowing the frantic back-paddling kayakers!
There were pelicans and kingfishers and durians too. Yup, our trusty guide Awie could not help but to paddle hard upstream to collect a fresh durian that had fallen into the river. Fantastic durian kampung. Delicious. We only had two spills and a handfull of near missed when it came to capsizing. Althought many managed to collect river & plant speciments along the bank, none could out do Riznal who paddled the last few kilometers with a dozen fish, mantis prawns and dragonfly larve in his kayak. Nonetheless, everyone greatly improve their paddling skills after 18km and 5 hours.
Dispite the fact that we were held hostage by a herd of cows at our take-out point for more than 20 minutes, everyone went home satisfied and dead tired.
